a Tenor in the City where East meets West

Correspondences from one of Effusion’s favourite Tenors, Michael Grundland, as he pursues a semester abroad. We miss you Mike. Safe travels!

- where are you? Hong Kong

-why did you go there? I wanted to do something completely different and out of my comfort zone. I was starting to feel a bit trapped in the “McGill bubble,” and I was curious to explore how living in a place so culturally and socially different from Montreal would affect my daily life experience.

-is it worth it? YES. I highly recommend the McGill exchange program for just about anyone. It is such an incredible opportunity to see an entirely different part of the world while still paying McGill tuition. And best of all…your grades don’t count! It’s all pass/fail.

- what gets you excited? I like waking up every morning and not really having a clue what I’m going to do. There’s always something new to explore in Hong Kong, and it’s really exciting. Making travel plans also gets me excited. I was just in Thailand for ten days, and I have trips to the Philippines, Laos, and Vietnam all lined up in the next month.

-what do you hear too much on the radio? I honestly don’t think I can listen to “I Got A Feeling” by the Black Eyed Peas ever again. That was my frosh song in 2009, and it seems to have newly arrived in Hong Kong. I also hear “Moves Like Jagger” at least once a day, but that’s cool. Also, THEY DON’T PLAY ENOUGH BEYONCE HERE.

Love & Heartbreak – But Mostly Love

One week ago, Effusion took the stage at Cafe Campus for another incredible Fall Concert. A packed house, an energized crowd, and a hot set list of new and old  material made for a night that we’ll never forget. We’d like to thank our volunteers and all those who helped make this concert possible, as well as Cafe Campus for their accommodation. And a special thanks goes to Galvao for an amazing opening set!

Here are a few photos from Sunday night (full album here), plus some videos from the audience after the jump. For more videos, check out our Twitter page.
